MXC-8 Features and Applications

MXC-8, chemically known as N,N-Dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA), is a standard tertiary amine catalyst. It is the “workhorse” catalyst for the rigid foam industry, providing a reliable balance between foaming and hardening.

1. Key Characteristics

  • Balanced Activity: It promotes both the reaction of isocyanate with water (blowing) and with polyols (gelling), making it highly versatile.
  • Strong Initial Catalysis: It is particularly effective at starting the reaction quickly (initial rise).
  • Solubility: Soluble in alcohols and ethers, but insoluble in water.
  • Low-Odor Options: While standard DMCHA has a strong amine smell, low-odor versions (blended with specific agents to prevent evaporation) are available.

2. Primary Applications

MXC-8 is extensively used in Rigid Polyurethane Foams:

  • Insulation: Refrigerator and freezer insulation foam.
  • Construction: Spray foam, sandwich panels, and board stock.
  • Other: Also acts as an auxiliary catalyst for molded soft foams and semi-rigid foams.
