Clear light yellow liquid MXC-A1 amine blowing catalyst in a glass beaker for flexible polyurethane foam

MXC-A1 is the industry-standard “blowing catalyst” composed of 70% bis(2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether diluted in dipropylene glycol. Renowned for its powerful catalytic effect on the water-isocyanate reaction (80% blowing efficiency), it is essential for producing flexible polyurethane foams. It provides high activity at low dosages and excellent processing latitude when combined with organotin catalysts.

Chemical Properties of MXC-A1

1. Mechanism & Performance

MXC-A1 is chemically engineered to drive the foam-rising process:

  • Strong Blowing Effect: It has a specific catalytic efficiency ratio: approximately 80% for the blowing reaction (gas generation) and 20% for the gel reaction (hardening).
  • Low Dosage: Due to its high potency, only small amounts are required to control foam rise and density effectively.
  • Process Safety: When used with organotin catalysts, it significantly improves “processing latitude,” meaning the production line is more forgiving of minor metering errors or operating fluctuations.

2. Primary Applications

  • Flexible Foams: The primary choice for soft polyether foams (furniture, bedding).
  • Rigid Foams: Used in specialized packaging foams where density reduction is critical.
